ASL of Sienna

Italy’s national health system is administrated through local health authorities. Each of the 21 regions is divided into local health authorities known as ASLs (Azienda Sanitaria Locale).

ASLs play a coordinating and administrative role and provide hospital accommodation and treatment, visits to family doctors (GPs) and specialists, laboratory services and ambulance services.

The project is conducted in the ASL of Sienna that manages 15 teams of emergency operators.

Challenge: to process patient records faster in order to save money

For the national health administration it is crucial to offer the best healthcare system whilst managing costs efficiently. One of the more expensive tasks is collecting and processing patient information.

In Sienna, paramedics used to record patient information for each emergency intervention using traditional pen and paper. The information sheet was completed in the ambulance by one of the paramedics and handed in to the administration service at the hospital. The information then needed to be entered manually once again onto a database. This resulted in a long and costly data collecting process with the risk of losing information.

Digiwrite solution powered by MyScript

Digiwrite worked closely with the ASL of Sienna to develop a solution to process patient data faster in order to reduce costs radically. Usability was also a key project issue; the system needed to be easy to use for people who may not be computer literate.
